San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is one of the USA’s busiest airports, managing both domestic flights and international links for the Europe, and Latin America. The airport was first opened on May 7, 1927 on 150 acres of piece of land that was chartered from famous local landowner Ogden L. Mills, and in relation to that it was named Mills Field Municipal Airport. Its name remained Mills Field until 1931, after that it was renamed as San Francisco Municipal Airport, later the municipal was replaced with International somewhere around 1955.
The airport serves the cosmopolitan city of San Francisco, Silicon Valley, and the wider Bay Area. It is the biggest airport in the Bay Area, and is the second busiest airport in the state of California. As of 2009, San Francisco International Airport is the tenth largest in the United States and the twentieth largest airport in the world, in terms of passengers.
There are four terminals within SFO that are terminal 1, 2, 3 and international terminal which is a very much liked one. There are seven concourses that work on each of these terminals. Boarding area A and G are used in international terminal to handle international flights. Terminal 1 and 3 having boarding areas B & C and E & F respectively handle domestic and Canada bound flights. While, the terminal 2 with boarding area D, have been undergoing some renovation work. O.R. Tambo International Airport came into being in 1952 replacing the Palmietfontein International Airport of Johannesburg. Until before O.R. Tambo International Airport, Palmietfontein International Airport served as the domestic as well as international airport of the city of Johannesburg. Since its beginning, the airport seems to have been highly affected by political scenario of South Africa.
In 1952, the new airport was named Jan Smuts International Airport. Field Marshal Jan Smuts was a British and South African Commonwealth Statesman who played an important part trying to put racism in South Africa to an end. It wasn’t until the 1980s that Apartheid period led many countries to end trade with South Africa and forbid South African Airways to fly over their territories. By the end of 1980s, ended the Apartheid era, and South Africa gained back healthy relationships with other African countries. It was then that the airports in South Africa were renamed and this time, not after the names of any politicians. Hence, the airport became Johannesburg International Airport. This airport became Africa’s busiest airport in 1996 and with the regulation of airport naming policy, was renamed O.R. Tambo International Airport in 2006. Oliver Reginald Tambo was a South African leader who was rated 31st amongst 100 Great South Africans in 2004. Read More
